Measure: AI & Search VisibilityWeekly measurement, on by default

Weekly measurement, on by default

What it does

Work we publish for a site cannot show whether AI engines cite it until something asks them. So each project is measured once a week by default: it is given a visibility watchlist of its own, which asks AI engines that search the web the questions buyers ask and records whether the answers name the business and cite its site. It runs on your own AI keys and spends your own AI credit. That is why it is announced before anything is spent, and why one press switches it off.

Which projects

A project is given one when all of these are true: - the account can make changes - trials included, never a read-only account; - the account holds an AI key for an engine that searches the web as it answers (an answer from memory cannot see anything published this week); - the site has at least three measured topics; - something has been published for the site, or its set-up is finished; - no visibility watchlist measures the site already, running or switched off. A site you already measure, or chose not to, is left as it is. Archived projects are never measured. Projects that existed before are given theirs the same way, with the same notice.

What it asks

Ten questions a week: two about the business itself and eight about four of its measured topics, taken in turn from week to week, focus topics first. While the site has fewer than four, the questions left over are about the business. They are asked of up to three of your engines that search the web, one per model: Gemini on its own key first, then OpenRouter, then the order you set for writing. Before each scheduled run, if ten questions would be estimated at more than $2 a run, the watchlist is lowered to six and stays at six; the notice gives ten and their cost, and the project page then shows six. A number of questions you set yourself on the AI Visibility page is never changed.

How you are told, before anything is spent

1. We email the account holder (the account's first login), whatever your email alert settings say: "Weekly AI measurement starts tomorrow for" the site. It says what will be asked, on which engines, how often, and about what it will cost. 2. The first run is no sooner than 24 hours after that email is sent, at the next hourly check. If the email cannot be sent, nothing runs: we try again every hour, and the 24 hours start when it goes. 3. The project page carries the same notice and says when we emailed you. The cost is in money, on your own AI credit: about so much a run and so much a month at today's sizes. It is an estimate from the token counts of your recent runs (or of runs this size on our own account), with the search fees we hold for OpenRouter, Claude, OpenAI and xAI added in, and it names the search charges it leaves out: Perplexity's, and Google's for searches beyond those included each month. Nothing we start spends on the watchlist before its first run is due - not its weekly run, nor anything that borrows its engines, such as tracked prompts or a gap's before-reading. If measurement is held after the notice - for example while the account is read-only - and can run again within seven days of that email, it starts on that email rather than sending another. Later than that, a fresh email and a fresh 24 hours.

Run it now, or don't measure it

The email has two buttons, and the project page has the same two: - "Run it now" starts the first run at once instead of waiting for the 24 hours, and the weekly runs carry on from that day. It is offered once the email has gone, until the first run. - "Don't measure this project" asks you to confirm, then switches it off. Nothing more is spent on it. The email's buttons open the project page, after signing in if you need to, and nothing happens until you confirm there. "Don't measure this project" works on a read-only account too.

Switching it off, and back on

A no is remembered: we never switch it back on by ourselves. Any of these is a no: - "Don't measure this project", on the project page or from the email. - Deleting the default watchlist on the AI Visibility page. It is switched off and kept rather than deleted, so it is not made again. - Deleting the site's own watchlist. That is kept as a no too, so no default is made in its place. To switch it back on, press "Measure weekly again" on the project page. That is the only way back from a no. If it never ran, you get a fresh notice and the 24 hours again. One switch-off is not a no: deleting the last project for a site switches its weekly measurement off, and if you add a project for that site again, it switches back on within the hour, and you can still choose not to measure it.

When it pauses itself

After three runs in a row that could not use your AI key - refused, or out of credit; rate limits and daily quotas do not count - or at once when none of its engines has a key any more. The project page says so, and so does one email to the account's users if email alerts are on. Nothing more is spent. Fix the key in AI Settings, then press "Measure weekly again". A watchlist you made yourself is never paused for its key.

What it does not cover

Google's AI Overviews are measured separately: watch the searches that matter to you on the AI Overview page, which runs on your own DataForSEO credit, only if you choose to. Nothing is made or run for a read-only account.

The notice is the moment to decide. If a project should not be measured, press "Don't measure this project" in the email or on the project page before the first run.
