Measure: AI & Search VisibilityAsking Google AI Mode

Asking Google AI Mode

What it is

Google AI Mode is Google's conversational search: a page that is an AI answer, with the sites it drew on beside it. It is a different product from the AI Overview that sits on top of an ordinary results page, and it can answer the same question differently and cite different sites. Switch it on for a project and each of its tracked prompts is also asked of Google AI Mode. We do not ask Google ourselves: DataForSEO, a data provider, reads Google's AI Mode page for the question, from the place you set for the project, on your own DataForSEO account. It is for tracked prompts only - at most 20 a project. Your watched AI Overview searches are not read in AI Mode, and your visibility runs, your visibility score, your engines' tracked-prompt figures and your AI Overview figures stay exactly as they are.

Before you switch it on

The same two things as for the apps (see "Asking the ChatGPT and Gemini apps"): your DataForSEO login in Settings, and a Target location on the project in Manage Project. AI Mode is asked from the PLACE ITSELF, as the Gemini app is: a project in Leeds is asked from Leeds. No location means nothing is asked. There is no default place: we ask Google AI Mode from the place you choose, never one we pick.

The switch, and why it can be greyed out

It is on the Tracked prompts card, beside the app switches: "Also ask Google AI Mode". It is off until you tick it, and it belongs to one project. Beside it, the card says where it is asked from and about what it costs you a month, for example: "Also ask Google AI Mode - through DataForSEO, from Manchester, England, United Kingdom, on your DataForSEO credit: about 10 cents a month." When it cannot be ticked, the reason is written under it in amber: • "Add your DataForSEO login in Settings first: Google AI Mode is read on your own DataForSEO account." • "This project has no location set. We ask Google AI Mode from the place you choose, never one we pick." • A location that has not been checked, is not on DataForSEO's list, or was refused - the same words, and the same fixes, as for the apps. • "Google AI Mode cannot be asked from (the place): DataForSEO refused that place ..." with DataForSEO's own reason. Google does not offer AI Mode everywhere. We do not send that place again until you change the location (after 40 days it is tried once more). While your account is active, a switch that is already on can always be switched off.

When it is asked, and when answers come in

From the next check (every 15 minutes), each tracked prompt of the project that is not paused is sent; when many are waiting across accounts, some go out at the checks that follow. After that each prompt is asked again on its own schedule - daily, weekly (the default) or monthly - counted from when AI Mode last asked it, so never more often than once a day. AI Mode keeps its own schedule: your engines and the apps never wait for it, or it for them. The questions are queued with DataForSEO, and until an answer is in the prompt's line says "answer not in yet". An answer DataForSEO has not returned after 12 hours is written off, and the line says so with the reason - "DataForSEO had not answered after 12 hours." The question was paid for when it was sent, so it is not sent again before its next turn. Nothing is sent while your account is read-only.

Reading the answers

Google AI Mode has a line of its own under the prompt, apart from your engines and the apps. For example: "Google AI Mode, via DataForSEO, from Manchester, England, United Kingdom: named in 1 of 3 answers, cited in 1 (2 more readings with no AI Mode answer) · last asked 9 Oct" • NAMED and CITED are counts out of the answers Google gave, never a percentage, read by the same rules as your engines' answers. • Open the prompt's history ("Answers so far") and AI Mode has its own section, "Google AI Mode, through DataForSEO": each reading opens to show the whole answer and what it cited, your own pages marked "your site". • Search every answer finds AI Mode's answers too, labelled "Google AI Mode (via DataForSEO)". WHEN GOOGLE GIVES NO AI MODE ANSWER. Sometimes the page comes back with no AI Mode answer on it. That reading named nobody because nothing was answered, so it is never counted as "not named": it is counted apart - "(2 more readings with no AI Mode answer)" - and the prompt is asked again on its own schedule, never set aside for a month. When the project's latest readings (three or more) all came back that way and none was answered, the switch says Google may not offer AI Mode from that place. What AI Mode's answers are never part of: your visibility score, your visibility runs, your engines' tracked-prompt figures, the apps' lines, and every AI Overview figure - presence, citation, source history and the AI Overview budget. AI Mode has no ordinary results list, so it says nothing about where your site ranks.

When it cites a page you published

A page or evidence piece of yours that an AI Mode answer cites is recorded as cited, dated by that answer, under "Google AI Mode" - its own line in the record of which published pages have been cited, never added to your AI Overview credit. It then counts as cited in What's working, on your project page and in the agent tools' published-evidence ledger, like a citation from any other surface. A citation date already on record is never moved by an answer read later.

What it costs

About $0.0012 a question, queued, on your own DataForSEO credit, billed by DataForSEO. Each tracked prompt is one question every time it is asked: • 20 weekly prompts: about 80 questions a month - about 10 cents. • 20 daily prompts: about 600 questions a month - about 72 cents. There is no budget for it, and it is NOT part of your AI Overview budget: the card shows the estimate for the project beside the switch. It stops when you switch it off, pause the prompts or remove them, and while your account is read-only. Switching it off keeps the answers so far; removing a tracked prompt removes its AI Mode answers with it.

AI Mode's answers are generated, and the same question asked twice can name different businesses and cite different sites. Read the counts over weeks, not one answer.
