Measure: AI & Search VisibilityMeasuring at no cost

Measuring at no cost

Who pays for a measurement

Measuring asks real AI engines your questions on your own API key, so the engine bills you, not us. That is also why nothing is ever asked behind your back. One route costs nothing at all, and it is worth knowing exactly which one, because the obvious choice is the wrong one. Google's free tier includes live Google Search grounding on gemini-2.5-flash and gemini-2.5-flash-lite — 500 grounded questions a day, shared between the two, with the tokens free as well. The newer 3.x models do NOT ground on the free tier: Google lists Google Search as "not available" there, so a 3.x model on a free key answers from memory and we mark the result training recall rather than a real measurement.

Setting up a key that costs nothing

1. Go to Google AI Studio and sign in with the Google account you want the measuring to belong to. 2. Make a project of its own for this — "Ranking Factory measurement" or similar — rather than reusing a project you already work in. An existing project is the likeliest place for billing to already be attached, and billing is what moves it to the paid tier. 3. Do not attach a billing account. On AI Studio's projects screen the project should show the free tier, with "Set up billing" offered as an action. Seeing that offer is the point: leave it alone. 4. Create an API key against that project and paste it into Settings → AI keys here. 5. Choose gemini-2.5-flash (or gemini-2.5-flash-lite) as the model. This is the part people get wrong: the newest model in the list cannot search on a free key. That gives you 500 grounded questions a day at no cost. Weekly measurement of ten questions on one project uses about ten a week. If you ever do pass the quota, a project with no billing account has nothing to charge: the calls are refused, and we record a refusal rather than reporting an empty answer as a measurement of zero.

What the free tier costs you instead

Google's pricing table marks free-tier traffic "used to improve our products: yes", and paid-tier traffic "no". Your questions on a free key — which are your brand, your competitors and your customers' phrasing — go into Google's product improvement. If that is not acceptable to you or your client, use a paid key; it is the same measurement. The other trade is age: 2.5 Flash is an older model than 3.x. The search behind it is live either way, and the citations we read come from Google's own grounding data rather than from the model's prose, so the sources are sound. The wording of the answer is an older model's.

If you turn billing on

Nothing breaks, and grounding gets cheaper per question rather than dearer: • gemini-2.5-flash keeps 1,500 grounded questions a DAY free, then $35 per 1,000. Tokens are billed at $0.30 per million in and $2.50 per million out — around a tenth of a penny a question. • gemini-3.x can ground once billing is on: 5,000 searches a month free, then $14 per 1,000, with tokens at $0.75 and $3.75 per million (3.7 Flash, until 31 December 2026). Roughly a quarter of a penny a question. Both stay inside the free search allowance at any volume this product generates.

The free offers that do not help

Several providers give away tokens: Groq's free tier, Cerebras, Cloudflare Workers AI, and OpenRouter's free model collection. None of them include live search, and search is the whole point — a model answering from training cannot see anything you published this week. OpenRouter says so plainly in its own documentation: web search costs extra even on free models, currently $0.007 a request. Its free collection holds no Gemini and no Grok model. Figures checked 23 September 2026.

Whichever you use, it is your key and your quota. You can change the engine, pause the weekly run or remove the key whenever you like, and nothing here asks an engine on your behalf afterwards.
