Bing Webmaster Tools
What it does
Bing Webmaster Tools is Microsoft's equivalent of Search Console. Connect the login you use for it and we can see which of your sites Bing has verified, and whether the pages we published on them are in Bing's index. It is read only. We ask Bing for read-only access (its webmaster.read permission), never permission to change anything. One login covers every site it has verified, and you can connect more than one.
Connecting
1. Open Connections, Bing, and press Connect Bing. 2. Sign in to Bing Webmaster Tools with the Microsoft, Google or Facebook login you use there, and allow access. 3. Bing sends you back to Connections, where the connection is listed with the sites on that login, each marked Verified or Not verified. Test reads the site list again and says what it found. If Bing stops accepting the connection - access was withdrawn, or has lapsed - the tab says so in words and offers Reconnect. Disconnect deletes both of the connection's tokens, its site list, and the index checks and search figures read through it. Microsoft documents no way for an app to withdraw its access, so nothing is sent to Bing. AI Performance reports you uploaded stay until you delete the account.
On each project
A project's page says "Verified in Bing" when a connected login has verified its site, or "Not in Bing yet: add it in Bing Webmaster Tools (or import it from Search Console)". Importing from Search Console is the quickest route: Bing Webmaster Tools can bring in the sites you have verified in Google, and an imported site counts as verified. www and the bare domain are treated as one site here; a different subdomain is a different site. Nothing is said on a project when no Bing login is connected.
Bing's searches beside Google's
For a site Bing has verified, Bing's own search figures - impressions, clicks and average position - are read once a day and shown on the project page beside Search Console's, one row per search. Google, Bing and Both choose which you see. The two are never added together: they are different engines' counts. A dash means that engine listed nothing for that search. We read up to 250 of Search Console's searches; when it has more, the table says a dash under Google means the search is not among those 250. If Search Console is not connected for the site, you see Bing's searches alone. Bing gives its search figures by the week, where Search Console gives days, so every Bing figure says which weeks it covers - for example "Bing, 4 weeks: its weekly rows dated 11 Sep to 2 Oct". Under Search Console's tiles, Bing's own tiles add up the searches Bing listed in those weeks; that is not every search that found your site. When you add keywords with Generate or Import from GSC you can take them from Google, Bing or both, each with its own figures; a new campaign's "Pull suggestions from Bing" adds the phrases alone. The keyword table also has Pull from Bing beside Pull from GSC. It adds the searches Bing listed as keywords; their rank is still Google's, checked as usual, because Bing's position is a different engine's.
Indexed in Bing
For pages we published on a site a connected login has verified - pages on your own site, and any other address on that site - each item in your work lanes shows Bing's index status on its own line: - "Indexed in Bing": Bing has crawled the page and it answered. - "Not in Bing's index yet": Bing has no record of it, or has not crawled it yet, or its last crawl did not get the page. - "Bing's index could not be read": Bing refused or failed to answer. That is not the same as "not indexed", so it is never shown as one. - "Bing's index is checked once a day; not read yet": the page is on a verified site and has not been read yet. - "Not checked: site not verified in Bing": the page is on your project's site, but no connected login has verified it. Each page is read at most once a day (once a week after Bing has indexed it), pages never read first. Google Docs, Sheets and other pages on hosts you cannot verify in Bing carry no Bing line. The AI crawlers card on a project shows the same reading beside each page's stage, next to Google's. This is Bing's index, not an AI answer. It never changes an engine's figure, a citation rate or your visibility score.
Microsoft AI citations
Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report is Microsoft's own count of citations of your pages in its AI answers (Copilot, Bing's AI summaries and partner integrations, combined). It is not in Bing's API, so you upload its export: Reports & Tracking, Microsoft AI citations (in Advanced mode). Export the overview and the Pages view for the same period and upload both files together (or a .zip of them). The Pages file has no dates in it - its numbers are totals for the period you had selected - so the period is read from the Overview file. Uploading Pages alone? Give the first and last day it covers. We accept an upload only for a site your connected Bing login has verified. A Bing search-performance export or Google's file is refused and named. The grounding-phrases file is not read yet: alone it is refused, and beside the other two it is set aside and the rest imported. Send it to us so we can read its real columns. A page we published that Microsoft lists shows "Cited in Microsoft's AI" with the count and the dates, on its own line. It is Microsoft's count over a sample: a page that is not listed was not necessarily not cited, and the figure is never a rate or part of your visibility score.
Microsoft's count on What's working
What's working shows Microsoft's own count for the one site you pick, on a card of its own below Google's count, and never added to it or to the Cited by AI column: - every day your uploads cover, with those dates - a day no upload covers has no reading, and a day read as zero is zero; - how many of those days had any citation; - the pages Microsoft's AI answers cited in the newest export, with that export's own period, each marked as seen cited by our own checks or not. Counts only, never a rate. With nothing uploaded yet, the card says how to upload the export. On "All your sites" it asks you to pick a site, because two sites' counts are never added together.
Microsoft's count in the Activity report and the agent tools
Microsoft's count is also shown where Google's is. The Activity report has a card for it beside Google's, for whichever period you pick: the citations Microsoft counted over the days your uploads cover, how many of the period's days they cover, and the pages Microsoft cited. A day your uploads do not cover has no reading - it is not a day of zero, and Microsoft's own zeros are drawn as zeros. The period before is set beside it as a count; it is compared as a difference only when both periods are covered by at least a week of the same number of days, because there is no per-day average to bridge two different coverages. An AI assistant connected through the agent tools sees it on each published page in get_published_evidence: Microsoft's count for the page over the export's own dates, and which upload it came from. A page the export does not list has no figure there, which is not the same as zero or "not cited". It is Microsoft's count, never a rate, and never added to your citation counts or to Google's.
